Our Company Station Operations

Since we began operating stations in 1934 (WHIO-AM, Dayton, OH), Cox Radio has been successful by responding to the needs of our listeners. To that end, local focus is paramount. And the only way for that to happen is by having radio station employees run the stations at the local level. This decentralized approach is consistent throughout our markets, and helps to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit that produces vibrant radio and a winning business operation.

Our philosophy includes a clustering strategy that maintains a solid station mix across high-growth areas. This allows us to serve a more broad and diverse audience. We also believe that clustering in diverse geographic areas generates economies of scale, lets us participate in a number of local advertising markets, and shields us from regional economic factors. More importantly, however, clustering gives us a strong marketing platform for our advertisers. In addition to clustering, by mixing start-up and mature stations, we are able to pursue growth and cash flow consistency throughout the company.

Station Programming

Radio is all about pleasing your listeners, and at Cox Radio we know this should not be a guessing game. That’s why we’re committed to doing extensive, thorough audience research and then crafting our stations’ programming to what we learn. Our stations continually ask, listen and learn.

Our number one resource for success is our employees. By hiring talented people with initiative, team skills, effective communication ability, high ethical standard and a willingness to be part of the local community, Cox Radio is able to produce programming of the highest caliber.

Currently, our formats include several varieties of News/Talk, CHR, Rock, Country, Urban, Eighties, AC, Oldies, and Gospel.

Local Events

Since the local community is the lifeblood of a successful radio station, Cox Radio stations never miss a chance to participate in local events. We want to have local people turn to us, not just turn us on. Though station promotional events like concerts and festivals, baby and job fairs, and remotes and appearances are certainly important, it’s equally important to be good citizens of the community. Our stations are regularly a part of local events that support charities, schools and other community organizations.

Public Affairs

We are part of a family-owned business that has grown and prospered for over 100 years by not only adapting to our changing world, but by also being a positive influence in the community. Cox commits to operating with integrity, dignity and respect, both internally and externally. While times change, our principles do not. We are committed to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve. We do this by using our media to educate the public about important issues, such as the environment, and through responsible company and individual actions including volunteerism and financial support.
